Our task was to create an ecotourism product aimed at increasing tourism for rural

Panamanian coffee farms

Overview

As part of an Engineering Entrepreneurship project, my team and I designed an innovative solution that would improve the ecotourism experience while supporting sustainable tourism. To understand stakeholder needs, we spent three weeks in Panama conducting immersive field research and interviews in partnership with a rural coffee farm.

Research

To better understand rural coffee farms in Panama, our team partnered with Cuatros Caminos Coffee Farm located in Boqete, Panama.

Through immersive field research in Panama, we identified key stakeholders and conducted interviews with rural coffee farm owners, tourism operators, and travelers to learn about the ecotourism experience. This research helped us identify opportunities to attract more visitors to rural farms while exploring how technology could enhance tours.

Research findings showed that tourists wanted technology to enhance their experience and improve safety, while tourism operators desire innovative ways to attract more visitors.

Design

We started by exploring ideas like audio guides and translation devices, but ultimately chose

AR glasses because they’re hands-free and allow multiple features without interrupting the tour experience.

Prototype Concept

The EcoSight prototype shares form design, showcasing button placement, ergonomics, and a sleek wearable aesthetic. It helps visualize the overall user experience and design direction.

Buisness Model

We structured the venture using a Business Model Canvas to define core components of EcoSight, including its value, key partners and resources, and cost structure and revenue streams.

Then, our team developed a pricing strategy focused on value and accessibility to rural coffee farms, along with a consumer return model that considers the tourism season and durability.

We presented the EcoSight concept and business model to Cuatro Caminos and local stakeholders, concluding the project after the final review.
